You don't have to be a child to enjoy building something with LEGO bricks. The LEGO Group proved this fact more than once, by releasing various video games, in which movies are recreated with animated LEGO pieces. If you wish to build something with real-life LEGO bricks, you may not have all the pieces you need, but you can build it on your computer, with LEGO Digital Designer. The software places a vast collection of bricks, wheels, gears and other pieces at your disposal and it allows you to assemble them in a 3D environment. When you complete your model, you can save it, share it with your friends or publish instructions on how to build it and the best part is that no one will be in danger of stepping on one of the pieces.

LEGO Digital Designer is available for Windows and Mac OS X and it is absolutely free. The setup file is 185 MB, so it may take some time to download it from the Internet, but the good news is that the installation process will go fast and smoothly. You don't have to install any prerequisite tools or services and the hardware requirements should not be a challenge for any modern day computer.

Unlike other 3D modelling software, LEGO Digital Designer was created with ease of use in mind. You can zoom and rotate the camera in the building environment with the right mouse button and the scroll wheel. The available LEGO pieces are neatly categorized, on the left side of the interface. You can find basic building pieces, like bricks, in various shapes, colors and sizes, but you can also find clamps, wheels, gears, jet engines and many other component types. If you are looking for a specific type of piece, you can type a keyword and locate it faster.

All you have to do is select a piece and place it in the building environment. Pieces connect to each other like real life LEGOs. When you select a piece and hover over an inserted one, the new piece will align itself automatically. A series of tools, located above the 3D building area, can be used to change a component's color, clone it or hide it, hinge a model or part of it and flex it.

You can switch from the building environment to a scenery, if you wish to view your model in space, in a desert or other landscapes. While this view mode is enabled, you can rotate and zoom, take screenshots and make the figure explode. The software can also generate a building guide for your model. You can play it step by step, send it to LEGO.com or export it in HTML format, if you wish to play the guide on a web browser.

Pros

The fact that you can build mostly anything with LEGO pieces should be enough to convince you to try this application. It places thousands of pieces at your disposal and it allows you to assemble them anyway you want, in a 3D environment. You can also generate building guides and export them in HTML format.

Cons

The software could use a better system of browsing through the available LEGO pieces, because it may take some time to scroll through each category. Thanks to LEGO Digital Designer's vast library of building elements, imagination will be your only limit. You can use its features to create any LEGO model you want, explore new concepts and share them with your friends.
